MacTung Shows Strength For North American Tungsten

Publication logo
MacTung Shows Strength For NA Tungsten

VANCOUVER — It will cost almost $400 million to build an underground mine at one of the largest undeveloped tungsten deposits in the world — North American Tungsten's (NTC-V, NATUF-O) Mac-Tung — but a strong tungsten price means the mine would pay back that investment in less than three years.

MacTung is in the east-central Yukon, almost on the border with the Northwest Territories and some 160 km northwest of North American Tungsten's CanTung mine. The property hosts indicated resources of 33 million tonnes grading 0.88% WO3, as well as 11.8 million inferred tonnes averaging 078% WO3.

A new feasibility study says that resources could support an underground mine for 11.2 years. An operation processing 730,000 tonnes of ore annually would produce 752,000 metric tonne units (MTU) of tungsten trioxide each year (1 MTU contains 7.93 kg tungsten). Operating costs are expected to average $104 per MTU for the first five years.

To build the remote project is expected to cost $356.5 million, which rises to more than $400 million with the $45.6-million contingency fund. While that number is not small, especially in the context of today's tight markets, the project carries two silver linings. First, it is expected to deliver a pretax internal rate of return of 23.5%, allowing capital payback in just 2.9 years.

It is interesting to note that Mac-Tung also has the potential to support 17 years of open-pit mining if, after the underground resources are depleted, exploitation switches to the near-surface, lower-grade resources. The feasibility study did not consider the benefits of this additional potential mine life.

The second factor supporting development at MacTung is the mineral in question: tungsten. Most of the world's supply of tungsten — more than 80% — comes from China. But China recently imposed higher export tariffs and strict production quotas for tungsten in an effort to keep more for its own uses.

Annual world tungsten supply is currently just under 9 million MTUs and demand is almost equal. But demand is expected to climb roughly 5% each year, while new supply is limited. The price of tungsten was depressed for some 10 years until starting a significant climb three years ago, which meant there was little incentive to explore for the specialty metal.

North American Tungsten hopes to start construction in the second quarter of 2010 and expects development to take some 27 months. But to build MacTung, the junior needs to find a lender or partner able to carry the significant capital cost.

In fiscal 2008, which concluded at the end of September, North American Tungsten lost $11.7 million. CanTung produced 272,480 MTUs by recovering 73.5% of the tungsten from ore averaging 1.03% WO3, but it was not enough to offset both operating costs at the mine and the costs of completing a feasibility study for MacTung.

The company now carries short-term loan facilities totalling $8.6 million and has just $700,000 in the bank.

On the bright side, in September the company tabled a new resource and reserve estimate for CanTung. The mine still has 655,710 tons of probable reserves grading 1.1% WO3. Before the new estimate, Can-Tung was only expected to operate for another year; it may now have an extended mine life.

On news of the feasibility study, North American Tungsten's share price gained 3¢ to close at 17.5¢. The company has a 52-week trading range of 10¢-$1.39 and has 127 million shares outstanding.

200EX show car is finished in darkest tungsten

08/03/2009

It won't matter what Rolls-Royce calls its 200EX concept when it reaches production; the press has already boiled it down to an inelegant if appropriate label.

When Rolls-Royce's 200EX was revealed at the Geneva Motor Show on Tuesday, it had already been labelled the "baby roller" for some years.

It all came out of the UK car magazines as a handy way to describe the new, smaller model.

The 5.4 metre-long 200EX is a design study set to compete with its former sister brand Bentley's Continental model, which is less than half the price of the Roll-Royce Phantom and selling in thousands rather than hundreds. Using what Rolls-Royce calls its new RR4 platform, the car is due for production in 2010. Read more...

Effective reactor materials such as nano-structured diamond and tungsten, with unique properties

Posted: March 18, 2009

(Nanowerk News) Increasingly, we live in a time that is obsessively motivated towards alternative energies, as global warming and its effects begin to dominate the world's collective consciousness. Favour is irreversibly shifting away from 'traditional' fossil fuels as it becomes clear that the future of energy production must tick all the boxes; abundant, financially viable and, above all, green. As our understanding and priorities have shifted, scientists at the London Centre for Nanotechnology and across the world have been working to establish one extremely high profile alternative energy source as a major potential player: fusion. Substitute for lead: tungsten

The American Sportfishing Association, an Alexandria-based trade group, isn't happy with an arbitrary decision by the National Park Service that would ban the use of lead components in fishing tackle in all national parks by 2010. The ban also would include lead component ammunition used by hunters.

An official with the trade group said it was surprised and dismayed by the announcement.

Ganzhou to procure tungsten and rare earth products
It is reported that Ganzhou City of China's Jiangxi Province plans to spend around CNY 1.8 billion to procure tungsten and rare earth products to stabilize market prices.

As per report Ganzhou will buy 10,000 tonnes of scheelite and tungsten products, 10,000 tonnes of rare-earth ore and all kinds of separation products made from rare earth. The province began building reserves in January and will cease to do so in December 2009.

Last October, the price of tungsten, rare earth and other non-ferrous metal products in China sharply dropped. Related enterprises in Ganzhou suffered a big loss. Around 88 rare earth mining enterprises ceased production.

The local government hopes the new stabilization move will help those enterprises resume production and recover financially. Click here...

China's tungsten city starts 10,000 T reserve buy

SHANGHAI, March 16 - Ganzhou, a city in eastern China's Jiangxi Province and the world's largest tungsten making region, is building up its own tungsten and rare earth reserves to support domestic metals firms, the Xinhua news agency said.

The city has raised a special fund totalling about 1.8 billion yuan ($263 million) to purchase 10,000 tonnes of tungsten concentrates and products, and 10,000 tonnes of rare earth raw ores and products, the official news agency said on Sunday, citing a local industry official.

All the 88 rare earth mines and 90 percent of raw earth processors in Ganzhou had halted production as prices had been slumping since last October, Lai Zhaotian, secretary general of the city's rare earth industry association, was quoted as saying.

To help metal firms in a dire situation after commodities prices collapsed, China's State Reserves Bureau has been buying various metals, including copper, aluminium, zinc and nickel. Read more...

Why liberals should love the free market - See Tungsten analogy

Vincent Patsy

I love to listen to liberals talk about the drug war, social issues and civil liberties. They often invoke the idea, for example, that a woman owns her uterus and her body, and she therefore owns the right to do what she wants with her body. The reasoning behind the above argument is very important, because by using the principle of self-ownership, liberals strike at what is essentially the core of classical liberalism or libertarianism. This core is the idea that individuals have natural rights and any violation of these rights is immoral.

All rights are essentially the application of self-ownership to different parts of one's body. I own my mind, lungs and mouth, and therefore have the right to free speech. The fact that the First Amendment to the Constitution protects this right is irrelevant — the natural right of self-ownership supersedes the Constitution.

But liberals' inability to extend natural rights to economics is where my love affair with them ends.

I own my body, my mind and my property. I can dispose of my property in any manner I conclude will bring me more happiness as long as I do not violate the rights of others. When I decide to exchange my property in a voluntary manner, I have a right to do so. By introducing coercion into the exchange of property, the government violates my rights just the same as if it was suppressing my right to free speech. And the system of economics which is compatible with natural rights is free market capitalism.

The resistance to free market economics often comes from a misunderstanding of what capitalists actually believe. As a capitalist, I do not want subsidies for big oil, I do not want us to use our military to conquer foreign lands, and I certainly do not want businesses to be regulated. All three of these actions represent coercion and an aberration of someone's natural rights. They are also tools by which larger businesses use government to oppress smaller businesses.

Our current situation is in no way free market capitalism, but rather revolves around business leaders and government coercing the citizens for the benefit of business over that of the people. Established businesses want to be regulated because they will be better able to pay for, and have a better understanding of, the licenses needed to run a business — like tax code, for instance. They essentially use government to eliminate their weaker competitors.

Another misrepresentation of the free market was brought up recently in Adam Gaglio's viewpoint (The perils of environmentalism, 03/01/2009). Gaglio mentioned environmentalists' notion that resources are scarce so we need to preserve them for future generations. But all resources are scarce — that is why you have to pay for food and clothing. There is a limited amount of all resources other than air. If resources were not scarce, we would be living in the Garden of Eden with all of our desires met instantly. Unfortunately, we were kicked out for various indiscretions, and now we have scarcity of all goods. This means that we need to utilize them.

Only the free market can deal with the proper utilization of resources. Suppose I owned a tungsten mine with a value of $10 million. If I dig out $1 million worth of tungsten this year, I will have $9 million left in capital value. Now suppose that the world is running out of tungsten. This change would be reflected in a higher capital value for my mine, maybe up to $100 million. This prompts me to dig out less tungsten, and since the price rises, the marginal users of tungsten may switch to other metals. If the government owns the mine, then there is no capital value. There is no possible way for them to know how much tungsten to produce now and how much to leave in the ground.

Author Isabel Paterson, one of the founders of the libertarian movement, once wrote: "Most of the harm in the world is done by good people, and not by accident, lapse, or omission. It is the result of their deliberate actions, long preserved in, which they hold to be motivated by high ideals toward virtuous ends." Liberals, I do not doubt your devotion to higher goals, I merely object to the means by which you attempt to achieve them. To my liberal friends, please, make yourself logically consistent and join me on the other side.

North American Tungsten sees strong future for metal as new composite technology widens range of applications

ANDY HOFFMAN

From Thursday's Globe and Mail

March 5, 2009 at 12:25 AM EST

TORONTO — Stephen Leahy doesn't want to take guns away – he just wants to make their bullets greener.

The chairman and chief executive officer of North American Tungsten Corp. Ltd. hopes demand for the metal his company produces will increase as tungsten's use as an environmentally friendly alternative to lead gains in popularity.

Tungsten can now be used as a non-toxic substitute for lead in fishing lures, wheel weights and protective X-ray vests.

But Mr. Leahy is most excited about the potential to use tungsten in bullets and buckshot.

"A ballistics company told me they think that lead will be banned in all shooting applications except the military in Europe in the next few years. They have to scramble to find an alternative and tungsten is the best alternative," Mr. Leahy said in an interview at the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) conference this week.

While no longer used in paint or gasoline, lead is still used to make bullets and fishing lures because it is so heavy. The toxic lead from bullets and fishing lures can leach into water and soil.

Lead is poisonous and can, among other things, cause developmental defects in children.

Mr. Leahy is betting that the environmental damage lead can cause may prompt hunters and anglers to pay a little more for lead-free products.

"Some of these [issues] are starting to gain a lot of momentum, like lead shotgun shot, because of what it does to waterfowl. It kills them even if you don't shoot them."

Mr. Leahy's company produces about 4 per cent of the world's annual supply of tungsten at its Cantung mine in the western Northwest Territories, close to the Yukon border. The extremely dense metal has traditionally been used in steel hardening, in electronic applications and in light bulb filaments.

Until recently, tungsten wasn't seen as a viable alternative to lead because its lack of malleability made it so difficult to work with.

Scientists and researchers, including a company backed by North American Tungsten, have now developed tungsten composites that can be shaped for use in a myriad of applications.

Through a joint venture formed in 2006, North American Tungsten owns 43 per cent of Tundra Diversified Industries. The privately held Minnesota company has developed a process to coat tungsten particles in plastic and bind them together. The weighty composite can then replace lead in fishing weights, buckshot and protective X-ray blankets.

Mr. Leahy believes that new applications for tungsten will have a major impact on demand for the metal. Annual worldwide production is a relatively small 80,000 tonnes.

North American Tungsten is also developing the Mactung deposit, which is located about 160 kilometres north of Cantung. The new mine will be much larger than Cantung and is expected to cost more than $350-million to build. With North American Tungsten's current market value of just $17-million, that won't be easy and Mr. Leahy is hoping the metal's new role as a more environmentally friendly product will drive investor interest in the company.

From a peak of about $260 (U.S.) a tonne, tungsten prices have remained relatively strong at about $225 a tonne.

Mr. Leahy expects about 10 per cent of the firm's production this year will go to composite applications. He's hoping to increase that to two-thirds of production within five years.

To make his point, Mr. Leahy takes off his Swiss-made tungsten watch and slides it across the table. "I've seen more new products in tungsten in the past few years than I have seen in the last 16 years combined," he said.

Icon decission to develop its Mount Carbine tungsten project, spurr's Share Purchase Plan

6th March 2009

ASX-listed exploration company Icon Resources has invited shareholders to take part in a share purchase plan, in an effort to raise $916 000 through the issue of about 18,3-million shares.

Icon shareholders would be entitled to purchase up to $10 000 worth of shares, at a price of $0,05 a share. If fully subscribed to the maximum allowable 30% of its issued capital, Icon would raise its target to $916 000.

The share purchase plan came after Icon decided to develop its Mount Carbine tungsten project, in Queensland. The company had been investigating opportunities to acquire a processing plant to fast-track the project, and the search resulted in an agreement with diversified group Metals X, to acquire its north Queensland Collingwood tin project.

The Collingwood assets included a processing plant suitable for Mount Carbine.

Icon would purchase the Collingwood project for $3,75-million, on a three-year, future-date convertible note, with a floor price of $0,05. After these terms were agreed to, Icon decided to extend its share purchase plan to its shareholders.

The funds obtained from the share raising would be used to pay the cash component of the Collingwood purchase, which was estimated at $250 000, and to trail test batches of both Mount Carbine and Collingwood tailings, as well as to supply general working capital.

Icon stated this week that the Collingwood project had a number of attractions, not least of which were the widely held positive long-term prospects for tin, and the significant known and potential tin mineralisation at the project.

The initial bench tests have suggested that the Collingwood tailings could also be profitably treated, and that the plant might be able to produce an immediate cash flow from the treatment of these tailings, while site preparations were being carried out at Mount Carbine.

The company further stated that it was currently in discussions with parties interested in retreating the Mount Carbine tailings in partnership with Icon, and added that the recent acquisition of Collingwood had been received as a significant positive addition to the project.

"The company is also in discussions with a number of tungsten producers which have expressed an interest in more involvement in the Mount Carbine, than just a simple offtake agreement. These entities are mostly interested in the larger project, that is the tailings plus the subsequent hard-rock mining."

Geodex Annou Completion of an Updated Preliminary Economic Assessmen Report on Its Sisson Brook TungstenYBDENUM DEPOSIT, NEW BRUNSWICK

The last document on the economic status of Geodex Minerals Ltd.'s Sisson Brook tungsten-molybdenum deposit north of Fredericton, N.B., was a preliminary economic assessment carried out by Wardrop Engineering in November, 2007. A robust NPV and IRR led to the recommendation that work proceed to the next development stage. Infill drilling, geotechnical work and environmental/community studies took place in 2008 and have continued since that time.

The present study remains at the scoping study (Preliminary Economic Assessment) level but is based largely on new data, particularly an expanded block model which has recently undergone preliminary floating cone pit shells with grade scheduling and a program of metallurgical work at SGS in Vancouver. Preliminary ore-sorting testing and the subsequent preliminary process design indicate that a pre-concentration circuit would profoundly benefit operating and capital costs. These further indicate that the ore-sorting process following three-stage crushing could concentrate 96.0% of the tungsten and 83.8% of the molybdenum in slightly more than half of the feed material, which increases grade to the mill and reduces capital and operating costs. A plant layout and process equipment list was developed and costed by an independent engineering group to reflect this revised concept.

The report spreadsheet uses a mining and crushing rate of 20,000 tonnes/day over a mine life of 20 years. Overall recoveries (sorter and mill) are 74% for tungsten and 70% for molybdenum. Tungsten is priced at an APT price of $US 220/mtu of WO3 in concentrate, with a blended $US 50/tonne reduction (gravity/flotation) for offsite costs. Molybdenum uses a long term price of $US 15/lb with an 8% assessment for offsite costs and roasting. Mine Operating Costs remain at $Can 1.30/tonne ($US 1.11), beneficiation costs are re-assessed at $Can 4.66/tonne ($US 3.96) with G &A costs at $Can 0.66/tonne ($US 0.56).

The re-calculated pre-production Capital Costs from the new process concept are slightly reduced at $US 339 million which includes a 30% contingency. Owner's costs include $US 1.0 million for environmental costs during construction. Sustaining (and sinking fund provision for reclamation) costs are assessed at 2.5% of original capital per production year.

Spreadsheet analysis indicates that the project has an Unleveraged IRR from Year -2 of 23%. The pre-tax NPV at an 8% discount rate is $US 372 million, $US 277 million at 10%. Payback period is in Year 4. Cumulative cash flow is $US 1.18 billion.

It has long been recognized that New Brunswick offers a mining-friendly environment, good access and excellent infrastructure. The economics of open pit development linked to the large size of the deposit suggest that much flexibility will exist in mine planning to react to changes in metal prices by extending mine life or increasing daily volume.

The recommendation within this report is that the company moves to completion of a Pre-Feasibility study by Q4 2009. The present report is a 'baseline' study or directional concept produced in a worldwide trough of mining finance. It requires refinement and upgrading in several areas to bring it to the stage of a commercial concept.

Tungsten Market is subject to supply cutbacks

China, who holds a monopoly on the supply of tungsten, churned out 84,470 tonnes of tungsten concentrates last year. This figure was up by 5.01 per cent YoY; however the figure shows a 10.71 per cent contraction MoMo, December 2008 vs. December 2007. In 2008, yield of tungsten concentrates in Hunan Province dropped 10.86 per cent YoY to 27,590 tonnes accounting for 32.7 per cent of the total output while it in Jiangxi Province has notched up by 5.52 per cent YoY to 39,306 tonnes which takes up 46.5 per cent of the total. The whole tonnages in Hunan and Jiangxi contributed as high as 79.2 per cent to the state annual production of tungsten concentrates.

Debt and High Grading to Push up Metal Commodities

[...] One of the obvious beneficiaries of this will be commodities, especially metals as the steel mills once again run at full capacity lifting the prices of coal, iron, manganese and specialty metals like molybdenum, tungsten, magnesium, cobalt and niobium. Copper, lead, zinc and nickel demand will also increase concurrently.

The surviving miners, developers and explorers will once more see an appetite for their shares and financings will again be available. You are already seeing 'bought deals' for up to 100's of millions of dollars. The recipients are profitable companies, mostly in precious metals with money in the bank, low cost operations and advanced gold/silver resources looking to expand. This tells us there is a lot of money on the sidelines, which will eventually invest in traditional risky development and exploration. More...

Sultan Minerals Identifies Potential New Tungsten and Zinc Deposits at Jersey-Emerald, BC

Sultan Minerals Inc. (TSX VENTURE:SUL)(FRANKFURT:RZN) ("Sultan" or the "Company") is pleased to announce the discovery of a new area of tungsten and zinc mineralization on its Jersey-Emerald Property in southeastern British Columbia. The mineralization, including assays of 5.0% zinc and 0.9% tungsten, was discovered at four widely spaced locations during a recent prospecting program on the 93 square kilometer property. Additional prospecting, trenching and a preliminary 350 metre diamond drill program are planned for 2009 to test this new discovery.

The mineralization, situated approximately 2.0 km south of the historic Emerald Tungsten Mine, was discovered during a prospecting program designed to investigate a 4.0 square kilometer area of tungsten and zinc soil anomalies. The new discoveries referred to as the Lost Creek Zone add significantly to the potential of the property. They are important because they have potential to host mineral deposits comparable in size to the historic Jersey and Emerald Tungsten and Lead-Zinc-Silver mines. Soil anomalies for zinc and tungsten are comparable in size and metal concentrations to the anomalies seen over the two historic mines. The zinc and tungsten concentrations found in surface showings are comparable to values found in surface exposures of the Jersey and Emerald mines and are similar to the two mines which carry associated molybdenum concentrations.

Significant Zinc, Tungsten and Molybdenum assays obtained from the sampling program are given in the following table:

---------------------------------------------------------------------
SAMPLE UTM UTM SAMPLE Zn WO3 MOS2
NUMBER North East TYPE (%) (%) (%)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
08POS-04 5435946 484649 Rock 5.18 0.10
---------------------------------------------------------------------
08POS-05 5435946 484649 Rock 0.63 0.13

---------------------------------------------------------------------
08POS-12 5435350 484180 Rock 0.38 0.18
---------------------------------------------------------------------

All samples were comprised of a series of random chip samples taken from mineralized outcrops and rock piles discovered by prospecting. The samples are not representative of a defined sample interval and are therefore considered to be "grab samples".

Samples 08POS-04, 08POS-05, 08POS-11 and 08POS-12 were taken from skarny laminations hosted within argillaceous sediments along the ridge top south of Lost Creek. Historic trenches (1970's) were noted at different locations along the ridge.

Samples 08POS-08 and 08POS-09 were taken from interpreted waste piles adjacent to a small historic adit, approximately 2000 metres northeast of the ridge top samples. These samples indicate the metal potential of the mineralized zone mined from this adit. The skarn banding that hosts this mineralization was noted to continue to the northeast of the adit.

The historic Jersey Emerald tungsten and lead-zinc mines were formerly owned and operated by Placer Dome. The Emerald Mine was Canada's second largest tungsten producer and the Jersey Mine was British Columbia's second largest lead-zinc mine. Sultan has recently completed 20,000 metres of diamond drilling, a scoping study, a mine planning study and a 12-month environmental baseline study as milestones towards reopening the Emerald Mine.

The highway accessible project is located 10 km south of the historic mining community of Salmo and has excellent infrastructure including power, water, an educated work force and a natural gas pipeline. The new discoveries highlight the potential of Sultan's large land package in this historic mining camp.

In September 2008, Sultan participated with Geoscience BC in a $542,000 Airborne Geophysical Survey centered on the Jersey-Emerald Property. The survey may provide information on the size and extent of the recently discovered mineralization as well as identify new exploration targets elsewhere on the 93-square kilometre property. Results of the survey are expected to be available in the spring of 2009.

Mr. Perry Grunenberg, P.Geo., of PBG Geoscience from Kamloops, BC, is Sultan's project supervisor and "Qualified Person" as defined by NI 43-101, who has reviewed and verified the contents of this news release. Mr. Ed Lawrence, P.Eng, former Manager of the Jersey and Emerald Mines under Placer Dome, oversees all on-going diamond drilling programs for Sultan.

Chinese ferrotungsten export prices firming up on short supply

It is reported that Chinese ferrotungsten export price moves up USD 1 per kilogram to USD 30 per kilogram because of short supply after the Spring Festival.

As per report, market participant notes mines in Ganzhou, Jiangxi, the key tungsten base in China have been shut down since last November and major ferrotungsten producers in Jiangxi are in the same situation.

The report added that they do not plan to resume mining and production in short term.

A local ferrotungsten producer said that "We expect a further rise before our restart. The restart time may be February end or March when the weather is fine for mining."

At present, mainstream price for tungsten concentrate has rose up to CNY 65000 per tonne compared with CNY 61000 per tonne to CNY 62000 per tonne before the Spring Festival.

Hunters endorse the use of Tungsten and special hybrid shot

By Jim Brewer For the News & Messenger

A fellow named Chesley Sullenberger went goose hunting last week in New York near the Hudson River. He used an Airbus A320 made for US Airways. He had a decent day. I think he got at least two. But there is an easier way to kill geese. Personally, I recommend shotguns.
When I first heard of the collision that sent several geese zooming through the jet engines of Sullenbrger's aircraft, I assumed that at 1,700 feet these were not resident geese, the pests that have taken over much of the eastern seaboard. Rather, they were undoubtedly migratory birds to be flying at that altitude. So barking dogs and scare crows which shoo away the local geese would not have had any effect on the unfortunate collision. It was just an unavoidable accident.
I also wondered exactly where the geese had come from. I used to think that geese and ducks flew more or less in a north/south direction when migrating. But that's not always the case.
Much of our waterfowl that flies over or lands in Virginia comes from the Midwest, as far as the Dakotas. My hunch is that the really cold air that came down from Canada about 2 weeks ago was responsible for moving the flock of birds that Sullenberger encountered. What a job he did landing that plane, by the way. Amazing.
The goose season – shotguns, not airplanes – is in full force here in the Commonwealth. In the Western Zone (west of I-95) hunters can bag five birds a day from now through February 14th. East of I-95, an area called the Atlantic Population Zone, the season ends January 24 and the limit is two birds per day. The duck season, by the way, ends January 24th statewide.
The US Fish & Wildlife officials have been generous with recent bag limits as they attempt to use hunters to thin an expanding population of resident geese, which are said to be entirely different birds than migratory Canada geese, Biologists say that migratory birds are a bit smaller, but otherwise look exactly the same, and their numbers are finally stabilizing after being threatened almost to the point of extinction.
The resident population, on the other hand, is made up of a bunch of homebodies. Geese that like to stay in one area. I don't have evidence to back me up on this, but the trend to warmer winters over the past 15 or 20 years may be a contributing factor. Local geese don't really need to fly anywhere. The weather has been mild and there are grain fields galore.
But the climate is getting colder, at least for the past two years. Perhaps that will push a few of our resident birds further south. We'll see.
To contain the geese, we really need more hunters, but many who shoot deer don't bother with geese. I guess it's the pain in the hunting pants factor. Goose hunting generally requires decoys, calls, blinds, a wallet full of licenses and special ammunition.
It's too bad because goose hunting is a great sport, the birds are delightful to eat when prepared properly and we need to radically reduce their numbers.
For those hunters who will be climbing into a goose blind in the next few weeks, I really encourage the use of Tungsten and special hybrid shot. As water fowlers know, non-toxic shot is required for ducks and geese, and most hunters use steel, primarily because it is less expensive. A box of 25 steel shotgun shells is roughly $25. A box of the new "Heavy Shot" can cost $30 or more for a box of 10.
But we don't shoot that many shells on a goose hunt. I would be ecstatic to know that I would get 5 or 6 shots, and that's only about $20. I spend more than twice that on a round of golf, not counting lost balls.
Steel shot is worthless in my opinion. It doesn't hold a pattern; it loses velocity rapidly; it has no clout for body shots; and the distance is severely limited.
The new hybrid shot, it's said, is as heavy as lead and does everything that steel won't do. Of course, if everyone shot a goose in the head and neck at 25 yards, there would be no reason not to use steel. But that doesn't happen often.
Geese fly much faster that you think, and most hunters don't lead the birds adequately. Therefore, many geese are hit in the body, and with steel, that often means a crippled bird. Tungsten will do the job and at much longer distances. Try it; you'll never use steel again.
And really, if you go goose hunting, use a shotgun.

New applications will benefit tungsten market

By Leia Michele Toovey

Holiday retail sales were worse than anticipated. The retail industry's leading trade group blamed a deep recession, severe winter weather and five fewer shopping days for a 2.8 per cent drop in sales. The National Retail Federation had originally forecast holiday sales for the combined November-December shopping months to grow 2.2 per cent, which would still have been the weakest pace of gain in at least six years.  The jewellery market was hardest hit, luxury goods sales were down as much as 34 per cent. However, the new Tungsten jewelry market faired exceptionally well over this holiday season. Titanium-Jewelry.com, a leading online retailer of men's wedding bands, tungsten rings, titanium rings and unique contemporary jewellery designs for men and women, announced today that its 2008 holiday season sales increased by 16 per cent from last year.  The company accounts for the rise as a result of "exceptional customer service" and continual advances in tungsten jewelry.  Tungsten designs are appealing to many for their unique style, and, they are far cheaper than traditional gold and platinum.  With everyone counting their pennies these days, the tungsten jewelry market may likely witness and exceptional year.

The Central Government of China has revised from the January 1 of 2009 the value-added tax to be imposed on imports of raw materials for production of ferroalloys. This revision is applied to 82 items of raw materials and the value-added tax has been raised from 13 per ton to 17 per tonne. Raw materials for the production of tungsten ore are included in this price hike. The value-added tax is also imposed on transactions of ores produced in China and this rate has been raised from 13 per cent to 17 per cent. This is expected to have a significant impact on already struggling companies in China.  There is already talk that these companies may appeal to the Chinese Government for tax breaks that will offset the fee hike. Tungsten prices creep higher for second week in a row

LONDON, Jan 22 (Reuters) - Prices of ferro tungsten in
Europe crept up for the second week running as lack of new
supplies from China reinforced a dearth of material in
Rotterdam, traders said.
Ferro Tungsten TUN-FERRO-LON was quoted higher at around
$30 a kg from $29 a kg last week and $25 a kg the week before as
consumer enquiries for the metal used to make steel for
industrial drills were met with empty hands.
"Chinese producers are closed and they will stay closed
until after the holiday next week," a London-based trader said.
"Most of the material in Rotterdam has been soaked up,
consumers are tentatively asking for prices."
Chinese cutbacks and plant closures, expected to continue
until after the Lunar New Year holiday next week also helped
support prices of magnesium in Europe.
Magnesium MGN-CHINA used to help harden aluminium for car
parts such as brakes and steering wheels was quoted at around
$3,000 a tonne from $2,900 a tonne, but traders said prospects
were poor given the dire state of the auto industry.
"This level of activity hasn't hit government figures by a
long chalk," one said. "There are new cars piling up everywhere,
nobody knows what to do with them."
Overall, traders said there was very little business being
done, that they did not expect to see a real recovery until the
second half of the year and that the global economic downturn
would dampen activity for some months yet.
"People are living hand to mouth, they are only buying when
they have to," a UK-based trader said. But he added that he
thought China's steel industry was already starting to ramp up
production in anticipation of infrastructure spending.
"It's easier to get things moving in China, they have a
holiday so things are slow, but their inventory has disappeared
and they are worried about all the cutbacks around the world ...
They need more than they've got."

North American Tungsten in strategic deals to become vertically integrated producer

company news image

Just before Christmas, North American Tungsten announced that it had concluded a series of strategic agreements, including a joint venture, to produce and market commercial tungsten products manufactured from concentrate at its mining operations.  This importance of the announcement should not be underestimated, as it completed the transformation of North American Tungsten from a mining company to a more vertically integrated tungsten business.

The announcement was the result of three years of North American Tungsten's involvement with Tundra Particle Technologies (TPT), at a pilot plant in Minnesota that has developed and tested patented techniques to produce tungsten powders and intermediates from low grade concentrates. TPT sister company Tundra Composites (TC) has further developed a patented process for manufacturing tungsten composites, a process that North American Tungsten has been granted access to through a licensing agreement.

So what does all of this mean?  It means that North American Tungsten has opened up another value add for its product inside North America.  North American Tungsten and TPT have formed Diversified Industries LLC (TDI), and will each hold 43.2 percent in the venture, with Queenwood Capital Partners LLC of Bloomington, Minnesota, owning the remaining 13.6 percent.  Diversified Industries in turn will be supplied, under a five year agreement, with 22,500 metric tonne units of tungsten concentrate, increasing the annual supply to 225,000 MTUs by 2013 from North American Tungsten.

TDI in turn is in the process of entering into a supply agreement with US ammunition maker Fiocchi to sell TUNDRA tungsten-polymer composite. TDI and Fiocchi intend to initiate the manufacture and sale of TUNDRA tungsten-polymer composites into the ballistics marketplace in the first quarter of 2009.

The deal will not only give North American a new customer, but it will also benefit in a value-add to its product generated through sales at TDI, in which it will hold a 43.2% interest.

North American Tungsten's Chairman and CEO, Stephen Leahy noted, "The success of our involvement with TPT has enabled us to move our output up the value chain, broadening our company from a producer of tungsten concentrate into a supplier of valued-added products intended for a 21st century marketplace. The TPT patented conversion process can utilize a much lower grade of tungsten concentrate than today's other tungsten processors require. North American Tungsten will have a significant outlet for lower grade concentrate.

"This whole concept of our involvement in new material processing options and participation in this new high tech tungsten composite business has been a long time coming. The ability of the company to provide low grade flotation concentrate at market pricing will not only position NTC at the forefront of new markets for tungsten, but will also provide new outlets for our low grade tungsten concentrate production well into the future."

"This is a historic launch of a revolutionary material that I believe will soon become the fastest growing segment of the tungsten market and will complete our objective of becoming a vertically integrated tungsten producer."

North American Tungsten is the Western World's largest producer of tungsten concentrate, a strategic industrial metal required in a wide variety of products ranging from jet turbine engines and high-speed cutting tools to electronic circuitry and surgical instruments.

NY state gets $109m, part of Lloyd's Bank Tungsten case

NEW YORK - Manhattan's chief prosecutor has presented New York's governor with a check for $109 million _ the state's share of a settlement paid by Lloyd's TSB Bank of London for transferring money from Iran and Sudan through New York City.

Gov. David Paterson and District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said Friday they believe Iran planned to use the money to buy tungsten from China. Tungsten is used in the development of long-range missiles.

Morgenthau said an investigation by his office prompted a federal case.

In all, Lloyds TSB Bank has agreed to forfeit $350 million for helping customers skirt U.S. sanctions on business transactions with Sudan and Iran.

The bank has admitted responsibility for criminal conduct based on documents filed in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

Documents show Iran may be purchasing Tungsten ingots to make Missiles

WASHINGTON -- U.S. security and law-enforcement officials say they have fresh evidence of recent efforts by Iran to evade sanctions and acquire metals from China used in high-tech weaponry, including long-range nuclear missiles.

Iran's efforts are detailed in a series of recent emails and letters between Iranian companies and foreign suppliers seen by The Wall Street Journal. Business records show one Iranian company, ABAN Commercial & Industrial Ltd., has contracted through an intermediary for more than 30,000 kilograms (about 66,000 pounds) of tungsten copper -- which can be used in missile guidance systems -- from Advanced Technology & Materials Co. Ltd. of Beijing. One March 2008 email between the firms mentions shipping 215 ingots, with more planned.

President Mahmoud AhmadinejadAhmadinejad

The United Arab Emirates has informed the U.S. that in September it intercepted a Chinese shipment headed to Iran of specialized aluminum sheets that can be used to make ballistic missiles. A month earlier, UAE officials also intercepted an Iran-bound shipment of titanium sheets that can be used in long-range missiles, according to a recent letter to the U.S. Commerce Department from the UAE's Washington ambassador.

Evidence of Iran's efforts to acquire sensitive materials also is emerging from investigations by state and federal prosecutors in New York into whether a number of major Western banks illegally handled funds for Iran and deliberately hid Iranian transactions routed through the U.S. One focus of the inquiries is the role of Italy, including the Rome branch of Iran's Bank Sepah and Italy's Banca Intesa Sanpaolo Spa. Banca Intesa said it is cooperating in the inquiries.

The developments could present President-elect Barack Obama with an early test in responding to what many Washington security officials now say is a rapidly growing threat to the region, including U.S. allies Israel and Saudi Arabia.

All of the high-performance metals Iran has been acquiring also have industrial uses such as commercial aviation and manufacturing, making it difficult for intelligence agencies to be absolutely certain how the materials are being used. "We can't say we know it would, or would not, be used for military purposes," said proliferation expert Gary Milholland of the nonprofit Wisconsin Project on Nuclear Arms Control, noting that broad economic sanctions on Tehran led by the U.S. mean Iran has to go to unusual lengths to find high-grade materials for industrial use as well as weapons.

Still, he added, "There doesn't seem to be any real doubt or debate whether Iran is going for the bomb or whether Iran is using front companies to import things. Everyone agrees on that around the world."

Iran developed the ground-to-ground Sajil missile, which it test fired late last year despite international sanctions designed to slow the nation's weapons programs.Nuclear Missile

Officials at the International Atomic Energy Agency said they believe Iran could have enough fissile material for an atomic weapon sometime this year, though it would need to be further processed into weapons-grade uranium. That assessment was echoed Thursday by Central Intelligence Agency Director Michael V. Hayden. U.S. and European governments have grown increasingly alarmed in recent months at the speed they believe Iran is developing ballistic-missile and nuclear capabilities. Last year the United Nations Security Council, which includes China, formally imposed sanctions on Iran's military and most of its banks for nuclear proliferation activities.

A spokesman for Iran at its U.N. mission in New York declined to comment. China "has been strictly implementing" U.N. proliferation sanctions on Iran, said a spokesman for the Chinese foreign ministry in Beijing. The export of restricted items such as high-grade metals, which include specialized aluminum and titanium, is prohibited, he added.

The patchwork of proliferation agreements don't cover certain materials. Sales to Iran of a powdered form of tungsten copper are prohibited by a nonproliferation accord China has agreed to adhere to, but documents about Iran's tungsten copper purchases refer to ingots, which aren't banned in the agreement though they can be used to make missiles. High-grade tungsten copper alloy withstands ultrahigh temperatures and thus can be used in the fins of long-range missiles to greatly enhance their accuracy, according to proliferation experts.

George Perkovich of the pro-disarmament Carnegie Endowment for International Peace said use of the ingots may be an attempt to legally circumvent the restrictions. Chinese merchants, he said, "take a legalistic approach to whether it is prohibited under the treaties," while on the Iranian side, "if there's a problem where somebody's not supposed to sell them stuff, their view is, that's the sellers' problem.' "

Because of economic sanctions and the small size of Iranian banks, the banks have long relied on big European multinational banks to finance their international trade and wire transfers. Many of those transfers flowed through New York City.

Documents detailing Iran's metals acquisition efforts are being reviewed by U.S. law-enforcement and intelligence officials, people involved in the matter said. Manhattan District Attorney Robert Morgenthau said he is conducting a broad inquiry into illegal transactions by Iran. Last week, Lloyds TSB of London agreed to pay $350 million to settle U.S. sanctions-busting charges with Mr. Morgenthau's office and the Justice Department. The bank admitted it violated U.S. law but said the practice has ceased.

"There are nine other banks that we think were doing this," said Mr. Morgenthau in an interview, including Barclays PLC of the U.K. A Barclays spokesman had no comment beyond a prior disclosure confirming the inquiry. Other banks under scrutiny in the probe include Credit Suisse and Deutsche Bank, people with knowledge of the inquiries said. Credit Suisse "is cooperating with the New York County District Attorney's Office, the U.S. Department of Justice and other governmental authorities," the bank said in a statement. A Deutsche Bank spokesman declined to comment.

ABAN Commercial & Industrial Ltd. had accounts at the Rome branch of Iran's government-owned Bank Sepah, records show. Bank Sepah has longstanding ties to Banca Intesa, although no evidence has surfaced to date showing that Banca Intesa facilitated illegal acquisitions of sensitive materials by ABAN, people with knowledge of the matter said.

ABAN is run by two top officials of Iran's Aviation Industries Organization, the documents show. That agency is already under U.S. and U.N. sanctions. Efforts to contact the firm by phone and fax for comment were unsuccessful.

An Oct. 14, 2007, invoice says ABAN contracted for 30,900 kilograms of tungsten copper alloy from a firm in China in exchange for €2.1 million ($2.8 million). Additional orders were made in 2008, according to a March 27, 2008, email to ABAN from Advanced Technology & Materials Co. "I was very happy talking to you on the phone," an AT&M executive told an executive at ABAN in the email. "By now we had sent 215 pieces" of tungsten copper, he added.

ABAN didn't respond to requests for comment. Dan Hong, a lawyer for AT&M, said in an email that AT&M received warnings several months ago of allegations "that we have business dealings with Iran." But he said the firm has never heard of ABAN. "AT&M never signed any contracts with and exported to Iran" the specialized metal, he added. "We checked our business records carefully."

Records show AT&M supplied the tungsten copper to an intermediary firm called Liaoning Industry & Trade Co. Ltd. That firm couldn't be reached for comment.

Another document reviewed by the Journal is a Jan. 10, 2007, message from an executive at a Chinese metals company to Shahid Sayyadi Shirazi Industries of Iran, regarding the impact of U.S. banking sanctions on payment for a shipment of unknown material. Marked "Top Urgent!" the letter observes that the payment was arranged through Bank Sepah.

The Chinese executives "are worrying the payment may be blocked by USA or UK government through their bank/treasury system," states the letter, from an executive other business records show had shipped tungsten copper to Iran. "You are kindly required to consider the matter and check carefully and seriously with Bank Sepah if the payment can be effected safely under the current situation."

Bank Sepah has denied financing illicit weapons programs. Shahid Sayyad Shirazi Industries is part of Iran's Ammunition Industries Group, according to the Wisconsin Project on Nuclear Arms Control, and has been under U.N. sanctions since March 24, 2007. Efforts to contact the firm for comment were unsuccessful.

Ormonde raises estimate for tungsten mine in Spain

Monday, January 12, 2009, 12:53

DAVID LABANYI

Ormonde Mining, the IEX-listed exploration group, has said its drilling programme in Spain has found the reserves could support a far higher production rate than initially thought.

The company said drilling results from seven the last holes at the Barruecopardo Tungsten Project in Salamanca may sustain a 400,000 tonnes per year production rate, almost double earlier estimates.

Tungsten has a high melting point and is used in light bulb filaments, heating elements, engines, as well as for toughening steel and a range of other purposes.

Ormonde holds a 90 per cent interest in the Barruecopardo project. The company expects longer-term prices for tungsten concentrates to remain buoyant. Read more...

Lloyds TSB marked its transformation into Britain's new "super bank" today by revealing that investors had shunned its merger with HBOS and admitting it has paid £180 million to US regulators after allowing clients to side-step US sanctions.

The UK taxpayer will now own 43.4 per cent of the merged business, which will be known as the Lloyds Banking Group, after investors bought only 0.5 per cent of shares on offer from Lloyds TSB and 0.24 per cent of stock offered by HBOS.

The share offerings by the pair were spurned because the price of the new shares had fallen well below the level at which they are trading at present.

However, the shares rose in early trading today, with Lloyds shares climbing by nearly 4 per cent to 136p and HBOS shares rising by 1 per cent to 80.8p.

The banks are expected to gain approval for the merger today as Lloyds TSB attempts to draw a line under a US investigation of its dealings with Sudanese and Iranian clients.

Lloyds TSB said that it had paid £180 million after an investigation by the US Department of Justice and the New York County District Attorney's Office which found that the bank had altered clients' details, allowing them to circumvent stringent anti-terror laws in America.

Although Lloyds said that it did not expect to have to pay any more in fines, it acknowledged that discussions with the authorities over the terms of the resolution had not yet concluded.

The infringements, which Lloyds admits took place bewteen 2001 and 2004, happened under the stewardship of Peter Ellwood and Eric Daniels, the present chief executive, who was appointed in 2003.

Maarten Van Der Bergh was chairman of the bank thoughout the most of the period, stepping down in 2006 to be replaced by Sir Victor Blank.

David Pritchard and Steve Targett both served as group executive director tor for Wholesale and International Banking between 2001 and 2004.

It has also emerged that nine other European banks, including Barclays and Credit Suisse, are also under investigation for allegedly changing wire transfer information that would otherwise have shown money originated from prohibited sources.

Reports suggest that US authorities suspect that some of the money transferred through the US banking system could have been use to finance Iran's nuclear and missile programmes.

Robert Morgenthau, the Manhattan district attorney, said: “There was an order for 30,000 metric tonnes of tungsten that would take care of every refrigerator in the Middle East and then some.

“It was not being purchased, we think, for domestic consumption . . . Tungsten was not used for making refrigerators but for long-range missiles . . . That is our supposition,” he told the Financial Times.

Iran uses front companies to secretly acquire Tungsten for guidance systems of long-range missiles.

WASHINGTON (AFP) — Iran is successfully using front companied based in the Gulf region and Asia to import American technology that can be can have military use, The Washington Post reported on its website.

Citing US researchers and Justice Department documents, the newspaper said Iran in the past two years had acquired numerous banned items including circuit boards, software and Global Positioning System devices that are used to make sophisticated versions of the improvised explosive devices, or IEDs, that kill US troops in Iraq.

The trade was briefly disrupted after the United States imposed sanctions against several Dubai-based, Iranian front companies in 2006, but the technology pipeline to Tehran is now flowing at an even faster pace, the report said.

In some cases, Iran simply opened new front companies and shifted its operations from Dubai to Asia, said the paper, citing unnamed officials.

"Without doubt, it is still going on," the report quoted one former US intelligence official as saying.

Bomb circuitry is only a part of the global clandestine trade that continues to flourish, The Post said.

A federal investigation in New York into whether banks helped customers skirt US rules forbidding business with Iran turned up evidence of Iranian interests trying to buy tungsten and other materials used in the guidance systems of long-range missiles, the paper said.

As a result of the investigation, a British bank agreed to forfeit 350 million dollars, according to the report.

Metal Prices will remain low for 2009, but province's mining companies remain optimistic

Published Saturday January 3rd, 2009

Christopher Anderson is mad about tungsten.

As the vice-president of business development for Geodex Minerals Ltd. (TSX.V:GXM), Anderson helped host a recent industry meet-and-greet to get investors hyped up about the metal, which he said is essential for the construction of any large building.

"We believe that tungsten is one of these new metals at the forefront," Anderson said in a recent interview.

Geodex has been working a tungsten deposit at its Sisson Brook property near Fredericton, which executives hope will one day be among the largest and least expensive open-pit tungsten mines in the world.

The company took a break from drilling last fall due to lack of credit and hunkered down to complete mineralogical studies.

But Anderson said market factors won't impede Geodex from moving forward.

This, despite the crash in metal prices that led to the idling of two northern New Brunswick lead and zinc mines owned by a subsidiary of Blue Note Mining Inc.(TSX.V:BN) in October, and that credit is still scarce.

"We're cashed up and we've got a great deposit. We're trying to work closely with the New Brunswick government to get this up and running," he said.

Anderson's optimism is not unique among mining executives and industry observers.

Experts predict commodity prices won't inch up much before the end of 2009. The industry, though, is eyeing the province's geology in terms of the long-term prospects, which look promising, according to David Plante, the vice-president of New Brunswick's Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters chapter and manager of the New Brunswick Mining Association.

"The mineral industry is going to be the cornerstone of our economy for the next century," Plante said. Read more...
